One of the most common tactics for seniors in retirement is to move abroad, moving from the country they know to one they’ve always wanted to explore. Naturally, if you own a pet, you’ll want to bring them. However, it’s vital to remember different regulations and items to keep in mind depending on where you’re going.

From ensuring they are comfortable to keeping up on their vaccinations, there are many items to consider before placing your pet in the carrier and preparing to place them in their new home. Pets can help with anything from lowering blood pressure to improving mood, so let’s discuss how to keep them with you.

Tips for Moving Pets Abroad

Pulling pets across the country can be stressful. Luckily, we have some helpful advice.

Here are a few tips to consider when moving your animal abroad:

  • Understand regulations for location you’re moving to
  • Speak to your vet
  • Determine timing if regulations will take a long time
  • Adjust to crate sooner rather than later
  • Speak to the airline
  • Get all documents in order
  • Consider all animals involved

The more you can prepare, the better. It’s vital to note your animal doesn’t know what’s happening. In fact, research shows pups can exhibit signs of stress in certain situations. Adjust them to the move and ensure everything is to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Rules for Pet Moving By Location

The regulations and requirements for your animal will depend on where you move. Some countries aren’t as great at paperwork, while others are nervous about the diseases and other things that could come with dogs and cats from another country.

We don’t have time to discuss all the rules for every country, but we’ve researched some of the most common places for older adults to retire. Whether you want to take on the golden coasts of Australia or take it to the next level with the exciting features of South America, let’s discuss what you need to know.

Australia

Australia is a common place to retire, which makes sense since moderate sunlight is good for you. There are several things to provide a safe arrival for your pet.

Here are the requirements for Australia:

  • Animals must live in a Group 1 country for 180 days before moving to Australia
  • Pets may not be 40 days pregnant or suckling
  • Pets may not be under quarantine restrictions when moving
  • Animal must be at least eight weeks old
  • Animals must not be on Australia’s banned list

These are the general stipulations for new animals. Animals must have a microchip and identity verification and be up-to-date with their vaccinations, treatments, and tests. They must undergo testing for rabies and receive appropriate documentation depending on their category.

France

France is another excellent location to retire. You can spend your no-work days eating baguettes and drinking some of the best coffee on the planet. However, if you want to bring your furry friend, there are a few things you must do first.

Here are the requirements for France:

  • Pets must be microchipped and vaccinated
  • Animals must have vital documentation
  • Pets must fly within five days of their owner
  • Pets must not be banned

These must be followed to bring your animal to France. Be diligent to speak with your vet and make appropriate travel accommodations ahead of time. If you come from an “unlisted country,” your animal must undergo a rabies test.

Germany

Germany is a gorgeous place to visit as a senior, offering plenty of natural wonders and exciting culture to explore. Bringing an animal to Germany is very similar to other countries.

Here are the requirements for Germany:

  • Your animal must be 15 weeks
  • Animals must be microchipped
  • Animals must have a rabies vaccine
  • Animals must have a health certificate
  • Animals must not be banned

Sometimes, pets must get a blood test if they fall into specific categories. If your pet comes from some countries, there are more steps required to make them secure for the country. Ensure you follow every step for an easy endeavor.

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is another excellent location to retire, filled with incredible history and rich with fascinating sights. Dogs and other pets will enjoy access to parks, cities, and the natural world.

Here are the requirements for moving pets to the United Kingdom:

  • Rabies vaccination and certificate
  • Microchip
  • Endorsement of paperwork
  • EU Health Certificate
  • Tapeworm treatment for dogs

This process is much simpler than in other countries. Ensure you have the paperwork endorsed before moving to the United Kingdom. Also, ensure your airplane is animal-friendly.

South America

South America is a warm continent, vibrant, and filled with a rich culture and history that any senior and their animal will love. While import requirements differ by country, we can discuss some general rules for the country.

Here’s what you need to import your pet to South America:

These make travel legal for your animal. We recommend checking specific rules for the country you’re moving to. While they might be slightly different, they will likely include the above.

Central America

The final location we’ll cover is Central America. Again, you’ll find an incredible history and vast culture with plenty of food, activities, and natural wonders to explore in your retirement years.

Here are the pet requirements for those moving to Central America:

  • Vet health certificates
  • Vaccinations
  • Rabies vaccines

The requirements will differ depending on where you are moving to. As with South America, check the requirements for your specific country. If your pet is up to date in health and you have all the paperwork, you’re usually good to go.

Final Thoughts on Moving Pets Abroad

Moving to a new country is an exciting time filled with joy and wonder, but you must take your furry friends along. The requirements differ by country and continent, so do the research before the move and provide plenty of time to get it done to avoid leaving your animal behind.

Heading to a country abroad is a big move, but it’s an excellent way to enter a new chapter of life and check out parts of the world you’ve never seen. Your animals will be by your side the entire time.
