The music world is larger now than ever before. So much so, that you might hear your grandchildren tossing out words you don’t even realize are connected to music.
Music has long been a point of human connection, something which can be difficult if you don’t know what music is currently “hip.” Read on to learn more about popular music and how you can expand your knowledge.
The Biggest Names in Music
We want to preface this by saying that there are now so many genres, we can’t predict what your children or grandchildren will be into. All we can do is inform you of some of the biggest names in 2025 and 2026, and the rest is up to you!
1. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has been big news for several decades now, and she shows no sign of slowing down. Although she started in pop country, she has since moved away from her country roots and now writes and releases solely pop songs. Known for her relatability and catchy lyrics, she’s a favorite among numerous generations and has become a household name since dating Chiefs player Travis Kelce.
2. Olivia Dean
Olivia Dean is a British singer and songwriter who has recently risen to popularity. At only 26, it is quite impressive that this young singer has already been nominated for a Grammy Award. She sings pop and soul ballads, and has numerous songs in the top charts. We don’t hear all that much about her yet, but we assume that’ll change.
3. Bruno Mars
Hopefully, you’re at least somewhat familiar with the name Bruno Mars, as he’s been on the music scene for a while, but even though he’s now in his 40s, he still releases hit after hit. Even if you don’t know his name, chances are you’ve heard his music because he’s won so many awards at this point, we doubt there is anyone, anywhere, who hasn’t heard him.
4. Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny has had a whirlwind career, launching him into the spotlight in a very short amount of time. As such, there are several rumors about him, and we are here to clear them up. Bad Bunny was born in Puerto Rico, meaning his first language is Spanish, but he is an American citizen. His main genres are hip-hop, pop, and reggaeton. He is performing at the 2026 Super Bowl, which we are sure will be shocking to many who haven’t followed his rapid climb to fame.
5. Lady Gaga
At this point, we assume everyone knows who Lady Gaga is, because not only has she had numerous chart-topping hits, but she has also started an acting career, which has her starring in movies. Lady Gaga is a pop singer most well-known for her unique outfit choices and often wearing wigs and masks. She has recently been named one of the best artists in history, so if you don’t know her yet, you should!
6. K-Pop Demon Hunters/HUNTR/X
If you have young grandchildren, you have 100% heard songs by this artist. It’s a bit confusing because the artist’s name is technically HUNTR/X and they are a K-pop group that was brought together to create the movie K-Pop Demon Hunters, which came out in 2025 and quickly took the world by storm(you can watch the movie on a streaming service like Netflix!). With pop songs that contain the traditional K-pop sounds and styles, they’ve been on the top world charts for weeks now, so if you haven’t given their songs a listen, you should.
7. The Weeknd
The Weeknd is a Canadian Soul and R&B artist who has won numerous awards for his variety of chart-topping hits in the past decade. Like other artists on this list, we guarantee you’ve heard one of his songs before, you just may not have realized who you were listening to! Like Lady Gaga, The Weeknd has also starred in several movies, so you might recognize him when you see him.
The good news is, while these are the top artists we think you won’t recognize, we know there are many you will on the top charts. Prince, for example, is still a widely listened to artist around the world, even though he isn’t as “trendy” as the others on this list. The Goo Goo Dolls also continue to maintain prominence in the music space, as does Radiohead and The Police. If you don’t know what music your grandchild is into, we recommend asking them to make you a playlist so you can get caught up and use music as a way to connect!

Spotify
Spotify is an inexpensive music app that lets you listen to as much as you would like for a monthly subscription. They also have a bunch of playlists you can listen to for free. You can also curate your own playlists and share them with your friends and family!
The main reason we recommend Spotify is you can head directly to the “top charts” and see what is trending currently. This will provide you with the best and most up-to-date information on what the world is listening to.
YouTube
After Spotify, we recommend using YouTube to check out songs your grandchildren like. Not only is YouTube a free resource (whereas you have to pay for Spotify), but YouTube can also suggest other songs for you based on what you listen to, meaning you can impress your grandchildren with your music knowledge!
Not only that, but YouTube has music videos that can be fun to watch as you learn to recognize the artists your grandchildren are into. It is also something you can watch together with your grandchild, as YouTube is often an option on Smart TVs (if you need help, ask your grandchild, they probably know how to hook it up!) Then you can watch YouTube videos together!
