As you age, you will likely find yourself in the doctor’s office more and more frequently. This can quickly become exhausting, especially without proper communication techniques that help prevent excess appointments. 

Proper communication is critical when you visit a doctor’s office, and it goes far beyond just knowing the correct terms to describe your symptoms. Read on as we delve into the nitty-gritty specifics of communicating effectively with your healthcare providers. 

Tips for Preparing for Your Appointment

We’ve all been there. You have an issue that you need to address with your doctor, but then you get into their office and suddenly you can’t remember a thing! Don’t worry, you aren’t alone, as many individuals struggle with this. Therefore, here are some basic tips to help you better prepare for your next appointment so you can get the answers you are searching for!

1. Write Down Your Symptoms as They Appear

When you suffer from multiple symptoms or diseases, it can be rough to remember everything you experience over the course of a week or a month. Keep a notepad in your pocket/purse, or use the notes app on your phone to jot down symptoms when they appear. Also, note when they disappear.

You should additionally consider making your own scale to rate pain or the severity of symptoms that change over time.

2. Bring a Paper and Pen to Your Appointment

If you have a lot of symptoms or ailments, then you are also expecting a lot of information from the doctor. Bring a paper and pen, or some way to jot down notes as the doctor speaks. Otherwise, you may forget something important.

3. Bring Someone With You

As you get older, it can become increasingly difficult in general to understand and implement doctor advice. Having someone with you to take notes and ask questions on your behalf can go a long way.

Tips for During a Doctor’s Appointment

Doctor’s appointments can be overwhelming, especially if you have to see specialists or suffer from multiple conditions. Here are some tips to keep in mind during your appointment to get the most for your money and time. 

1. Ask Lots of Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions as they come up! When you have an appointment, that is your time to have access to your doctor. If you suppress your questions and figure you will just Google them later, you could lead yourself astray or do more harm than good.

2. Ask How You Can Contact Your Doctor Later

No matter how many questions you ask, you will likely forget to ask something. Or a question may pop up later. Either way, ask your doctor how you can contact them with questions. Some may provide an email, while others will give you a number to call. Just know that you might be speaking with a nurse instead of your doctor sometimes. 

3. Inquire How You Can Find Your Own Medical Records

Most doctors’ offices now have a digital form of medical records that you can check as you desire. Ask about getting set up in this system so you can request items as needed. You never know when you may need a certain document for your insurance, government programs, or something else. 

Some doctors’ offices even have phone apps these days! How cool is that?

Additional Tips for Speaking With Doctors:

  • Don’t use “code words” for body parts, just say the anatomical name.
  • Don’t downplay your symptoms.
  • Talk about all your symptoms, even the embarrassing ones
  • Ask about the side effects of medications.
  • Mention all of your allergies, even if they don’t seem applicable. 
  • Tell the doctor about ANY supplement you take, even if it seems harmless
  • Don’t lie, this will only make it more difficult for them to help

Tips for Communicating With Your Doctor After Appointments

Many individuals assume that once the appointment is over, they are on their own. But this isn’t the case. You and your doctor are a team, and you should be working together to manage your health conditions. Here are some tips for communicating with them after the fact.

1. Use Digital Communication Whenever Possible

Doctors are busy people, so if your doctor gave you an email address, try to use that to contact them first. Of course, if there is an emergency, calling is better, but email is a great tool for getting your non-urgent questions answered promptly. You will probably be surprised at how much time this saves! 

2. Utilize Other Health Care Providers

Though your doctor was the one to prescribe the medication, your pharmacist is also a well of knowledge, as are the nurses at your doctor’s office. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions as well, especially if your doctor is unavailable. They will be able to help at least partially! 

3. If Something Isn’t Working, Tell Your Doctor

Not all solutions work for all patients, and a portion of healthcare is trial and error. If something isn’t working for you, or you are experiencing bad side effects, tell your healthcare provider so they can make adjustments. There is no reason to suffer if you are uncomfortable.

Additionally, keep up on your tracking of symptoms and how you feel after taking your medication. You never know when you might be experiencing a reaction without noticing it at first, or forgetting something! Remember to continue taking all medications until you are directed by a doctor to stop.

Overall, communicating with healthcare providers can be difficult, but as long as you prepare for your appointment, ask questions, and track your own health, you are well on your way to success. Additionally, remember to use plain language, take notes, and communicate when something isn’t working.
