As we grow older, we often find that we amass things, so many things, that we have to purchase a storage unit or a larger house. While this is okay for some individuals, many are choosing now to focus more on non-physical gifts, especially for the holidays.
So, you don’t want to buy your loved one something. Rather, you want to gift them an experience they’ll never forget. Read on to learn about the best non-physical gifts to consider this holiday season.

1. Duolingo Subscription
You are never too old to learn a new language, and a Duolingo subscription is a great gift for someone who loves to learn as well as for someone who loves to travel. Plus, if you have multiple people in your family who would enjoy such a gift, you can purchase a single family plan for about $120 per year. This means you and five friends (or six people if you don’t want a slot)can enjoy the gift of learning a language for one low price.
2. A Dinner Out
A dinner out can be a great gift for someone who isn’t too fond of things (or has a hobby that is too expensive for you to support). Just ensure you pick somewhere that they will like!
To gift this present, we recommend writing it on a card so they still have something to unwrap Christmas morning. Then, you can set a date after they open it!
This gift also works well for grandchildren, as there is likely a restaurant they like to eat at that their parents are tired of visiting (like McDonald’s). Just make sure you get the okay from the parents before giving this gift!
3. A Certificate for an Activity
One of the best gifts I ever gave was to my parents. They had moved to a new city and didn’t have any friends or ideas of things they could do for an evening date. So, I did a google search to research some fun date nights in the area. Imagine my surprise when there was an axe-throwing option just a few minutes from them!
I visited the axe-throwing website to find that they allow you to gift sessions with a printable certificate. Not only was a session only $50, but my parents used the gift a few months later and couldn’t stop talking about it!
Although axe throwing may not be available everywhere, don’t be afraid to use this gift to encourage your loved ones to try something new. Cooking classes, paint n sip nights, escape rooms, and tickets to a show are just a few of the activity options that come to mind!
4. Gift a Coral
Do you have someone in your family who is environmentally conscious? Then you should gift them a coral this holiday season. It sounds crazy, but thanks to coral gardeners, it is absolutely a possibility.
Coral Gardeners is a non-profit that works to replant coral reefs in Polynesia. For just $30 you can pick a coral for your loved one and name it after them. Not only will they get an email when their coral is planted, but there are also live streams which allow them to check in on their coral whenever they want!
I’ve also gifted this to my parents in the past, and they had a lot of fun with their coral. It’s left the nursery now and is out in the big blue sea(without a livestream), but my mom still talks about it at family events.

5. A Cleaning Service
We are aware this isn’t the most “fun” gift, but this is a gift that could be just the something a young family needs!
This is a bit of a pricier gift, as most cleaning sessions are $150+ for an average-sized house, but it can make all the difference to a mom who is struggling to stay on top of things. It’s even better if you offer to have them over for lunch while the cleaning is taking place!
For this gift, we recommend writing it in a card, or purchasing a gift certificate from the cleaning agency if available. This way, they can still have something to unwrap and can book it at their leisure!
6. Spa Gift Card
We all have that one person in our family who just needs to relax—and a spa gift card is often the perfect gift for them! We also love this gift, because it has a wide range—from a $50 gift card to a basic service at a chain like Massage Envy, to a $400 package at an upscale spa. This means you can adjust this gift to fit any budget.
Because this gift is more personal, we recommend a gift card whenever possible so the recipient can book at their leisure. Just remember to also include a slip of paper offering free childcare if your family member has kids, so the gift can truly be stress-free!
7. National Park Pass
Know someone who loves to visit national parks? Then this is an absolute must this holiday season. Like most of our other gift suggestions, there are a range of options for National Park passes, with the all-inclusive America the Beautiful one costing $80. If that doesn’t fit your budget though, don’t panic, as you can also purchase annual passes to a single park in your area for a lower fee (varies based on park!)
The only thing to consider with this gift is to ensure you are buying it for someone who hasn’t already bought one for themselves!
8. Audiobook Subscription
Have a loved one who loves to read? Then an audiobook subscription can go a long way! Plus, because there are so many sites available, even if the recipient already has one, they will definitely appreciate another (especially since some only allow you to pick 1-2 titles per month!)
Here is a list of all the audiobook subscription websites and their prices for a year, so you can consider!
- Everand ($11.99 for 1 title per month or $16.99 for 3 titles per month)
- Libro.fm ($14.99 per month for 1 credit but 30% discount on additional purchases)
- Audible ($14.95 per month for one credit)
- Spotify (Price varies based on plan but you get 12 hours of audiobooks per month)
- Audiobooks.com ($14.95 per month for 1 credit)
- Kobo Audiobooks ($9.99 per month with 1 credit)
